With version 5.0 of FortiClient is licensed differently compared to the previous versions and also the management has changed fundamentally. This item refers exclusively to FortiClient 5.0.x

The FortiClient can be used as standalone or Registered client.

Standalone Client

During standalone operation of FortiClient is not centrally managed by the FortiGate. Any number of clients are used. VPN connections (IPSEC, SSL tunnel mode) are counted in this variant on the FortiGate not a Registered clients (Central Administration). Thus, the client can be used for free in this mode and does not require additional licenses.

Registered Client

When Registered FortiClient the Fortigate manages all FortiClients. 10 licenses are included with each device once more than 10 licenses are required, an Endpoint Control license must be bought separately. This license is per FortiGate gateway licensed which is divided into 3 groups of devices:

FG-30D – FG90D FG-100 – FG-800 FG-1000 – FG-5000

This license is also required to create a customized installation file which modules is controlled by means of which will be installed and how the client is configured.

A Customized Installtion is possible from version 5.05 - you create an MSI file to only the VPN client installed. Thus it is possible that Antivirus, Parental Control (Web Filtering) etc. Module not even to install if there is already another Security Client is used with this function. Before version 5.05, the modules could be disabled, but it has not been not possible to install.

Enable FortiClient license

The FortiClient license is mailed. The code must be rubbed-and added to the FortiGate. Dashboard -> License Information -> FortiClient software -> Enter License

New FortiClient the license can also be purchased as an electronic license.

Once the license on the Fortigate is activated, the License File Partner Portal can be downloaded from Fortinet. Support -> Online Support -> Manage / View Products -> FGTxxxxxxxxx

Create MSI File under Windows

• Download FortiClientTools_5.0.5.0308.zip
• Open FortiClientConfigurator / FortiClientConfiguratorGUI.exe
• Select License File
• Optionally, a configuration file can be selected
• Select VPN Only
• On the summary page now stands where the installation file is saved
• With "Browse to output MSI file upon exit" the-containing folder opens

Create MSI file on MAC OS X

• Download FortiClientTools_5.0.5.127_macosx.tar.gz
• Open Repackager / FortiClientRepackager_5.0.5.127.dmg
• Select License File
• As the source FortiClient_5.0.5.127_macosx.dmg installation file must be specified
• The destination defines the location
• Optionally, a configuration file to specify
• Select VPN and press Only Repackage
